Language Acquisition

Language Acquisition ThemeThe Language Acquisition group focuses on language and literacy development in children with and without developmental difficulties. The aim of this research group is advancing basic knowledge and improving clinical and educational practice.

Current projects include

  • Early identification of childhood communication disorders
  • Investigations of children with communication disorders:
    • speech and language difficulties, such as childhood apraxia of speech
    • autism spectrum disorder
    • multi-system developmental disabilities
    • traumatic brain injury
    • literacy difficulties, including dyslexia
  • Psycholinguistic and linguistic aspects of children’s development:
    • statistical learning in emerging lexicons
    • the emergence of sociophonetic variation in preschoolers
  • Advancing the study of language acquisition through the development of corpora and innovative data analysis tools for New Zealand child language data
